The Shingle Banks at Pevensey are held in place by ‘groins’ ­ some very old ­ built from teak and weathered into remarkable shapes, covered in barnacles, rope, seaweed and shells. The living wood which inspired the poem was painted in September 2004 for the exhibition of paintings under the same title as part of the East Sussex CC Wood Season programme.
